Aquaculture centre provides support to Namibia's production and inland fisheries management

The Hardap Inland Aquaculture Centre in Namibia is strengthening aquaculture production and inland fisheries management in the country, playing a key role in supporting food security and promoting sustainable livelihoods through fish breeding and farmer support initiatives.

The centre, which falls under the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform's Directorate of Aquaculture, focuses on freshwater fish production, extension services, and inland fisheries management.

Senior Fisheries Research Technician Ernita Morwe said the facility is primarily responsible for breeding tilapia, specifically Oreochromis mossambicus, also known as Mozambique tilapia. While the centre previously worked with species such as common carp and catfish, operations have since been streamlined to focus on tilapia production.

"We produce fingerlings, which are baby fish, and supply them to upcoming and potential fish farmers," Morwe explained.

The centre currently serves farmers across six regions, including Erongo, Otjozondjupa, Khomas, Omaheke, Hardap, and Kharas, providing not only fingerlings but also technical support and extension services.

These services include site assessments, on-site training, and biological sampling to assist both new and existing fish farmers. In addition, the centre facilitates access to subsidised fish feed as part of government support to the aquaculture sector.

Beyond supporting farmers, the facility also produces fish on a small scale for the local market. Morwe emphasised that the centre's primary objective is not profit-making, but rather to contribute to food security.

"We sell fish at a subsidised cost to communities, especially because we are located far from most населated areas," she said.

Through its integrated approach to fish production, training, and support, the Hardap Inland Aquaculture Centre continues to contribute to the development of Namibia's aquaculture industry and the improvement of livelihoods.
